What is bachata? Origins, music and what makes the dance

What is bachata? Its Dominican origins, the guitar music, the basic step with the hip accent and the difference between dominicana, moderna and sensual.

Bachata is a partner dance from the Dominican Republic, with its own music: guitars, bongos and songs about love, passion and longing. At many Latin schools bachata is on the timetable next to salsa. Below are the questions people ask about it most often.

What is bachata?

Bachata is both music and dance, from the Dominican Republic. Since 2019 the music and dance of Dominican bachata have been on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.

The word bachata originally meant a party or a convivial get-together, not a music style. UNESCO suggests the word has African origins. In the Dominican Republic people often learn the dance young, at family parties and neighbourhood parties.

Where does bachata come from?

Bachata emerged in the twentieth century in the countryside of the Dominican Republic and developed further in the poor neighbourhoods of Santo Domingo. UNESCO describes it as a blend of bolero with Afro-Antillean styles such as son, cha-cha-cha and merengue.

For a long time the music had a bad name. Under the dictator Rafael Trujillo, who ruled until his death in 1961, the country was largely cut off from outside music, although Cuban boleros and Mexican rancheras still got in through radio and jukeboxes. After 1961 thousands of people moved from the countryside to Santo Domingo, and in 1962 the first recording regarded as bachata appeared. The urban middle and upper classes looked down on the music and associated it with brothels, poverty and the countryside. For a long time practically only Radio Guarachita in Santo Domingo played bachata. In the mid-1980s artists also started calling their music música de amargue, music of bitterness.

The breakthrough came later. In the mid-1980s Blas Durán recorded one of the first bachatas with electric guitar; sources give 1986 or 1987. In 1990 the Dominican group 4.40 released the album Bachata Rosa, which gave the music prestige and international recognition, even though it contained only three bachatas. From around 2000 the group Aventura from the Bronx mixed bachata with hip-hop, among other things, and took the genre to big venues in the United States.

What music do you dance bachata to?

To bachata music, played by a small group. UNESCO names one or two guitars as the leading instruments, with bongos, maracas, a güiro and a bass guitar for rhythm and percussion. Originally that meant two acoustic guitars, bongos and maracas; later electric guitars and a bass guitar were added, and the güira, a metal scraper, replaced the maracas. According to UNESCO the lyrics are mostly about love, passion and longing.

That recognisable guitar is the first thing you hear. You can almost always find the four counts in it, and that makes bachata a pleasant first Latin dance for many beginners.

How do you count bachata?

In eight counts. The basic step goes sideways: three steps to one side on 1, 2 and 3, and on 4 an accent with the hip. Then three steps back on 5, 6 and 7, with the accent on 8. Beginners often turn that accent into a tap of the foot or a small lift.

UNESCO describes it as a dance with a simple eight-step structure and sensual hip movement. That matches what you learn in the first class: the step itself is quickly mastered, while the hip movement and the connection with your partner take more time.

What bachata styles are there?

The best known are dominicana, moderna and sensual, plus fusion.

  • Dominican bachata is the original form, traditionally danced in closed hold, with a small square basic (box step) and fast footwork.
  • Bachata moderna emerged at dance schools outside the Dominican Republic, with a sideways basic and more turns and elements from salsa. Sources disagree on when: some say the late 1990s, a historian at the City University of New York points to Spain and New York around the mid-2000s.
  • Bachata sensual emerged in Spain in the 2000s; most sources name Cádiz. Its founders mixed bachata with influences from Brazilian zouk and tango: wave-like body movements, isolations and circular movements.
  • Bachata fusion combines bachata with another style, for example hip-hop.

Which style you learn depends on the school. Many schools teach a mix.

What makes bachata bachata?

The guitar, the accent on 4 and 8, and the closeness. Bachata can be danced in open, semi-closed and closed hold, and in social dancing you often switch between them. In the original style you dance close together.

As with salsa, there is a contract between dance partners: you stick to the basic shape of music and dance, and within that shape there is room for whatever you want to do with the music. Step too far outside it, and it no longer works. Leading and following are roles, not genders; more and more people dance both (see Lead, follow or switch).

Because bachata can be danced close, I want to say something clearly here. The intimacy of the dance is not a free pass to cross boundaries. If something feels wrong, don't assume it is part of it. You can always ask for more space.

Is bachata hard to learn?

The basics are manageable for most people. The music is calmer than salsa and the step is simple. What takes time are the body movements of the sensual style and leading and following in closed hold. In the first classes you also get used to rotating partners and to being close to a different partner each time.

You can easily come on your own. Schools often fill the classes with experienced dancers, and you switch partners during class.

Where do you dance bachata in the Netherlands?

In classes at Latin dance schools, at socials where salsa and bachata are often played side by side, and at festivals with workshops. Go to a social first to see what it is really like when everyone dances together.
