How much do dance classes cost in the Netherlands?

How much do dance classes cost? Expect 10 to 20 euros per class, depending on the school. How drop-ins, class cards, courses and memberships work.

"How much do dance classes cost?" is one of the first questions people ask. There is no single answer, because every school sets its own prices. But I can give you a rough idea and explain how the different formats work, so you can compare prices.

What does a dance class cost on average?

In my experience between 10 and 20 euros per class, depending on the school.

That is a rough range, not a calculated average. At the eighteen schools we looked at in October 2026, it holds for most classes; drop-in classes and 90-minute classes are sometimes above it. The price per class also depends heavily on how you pay. Below are the formats you come across most often, and further down what we saw at eighteen schools.

What does a drop-in class cost?

Usually the most per class, but you are not tied to anything.

You pay each time you come: no commitment, no contract length. A drop-in class (losse les) is handy if your schedule is irregular, or if you want to try before you commit. Not every school offers drop-in classes; some only work with courses.

What does a trial class cost?

Sometimes nothing, sometimes a small amount. It is the cheapest way to get to know a school.

Many schools offer a proefles (trial class) or a trial week. Bear in mind that a trial class is also there to win you over. To see what it is really like, it is better to also go to one of the school's socials.

How does a class card work?

You buy a card for a number of classes, for example ten, and one class is ticked off each time you come. In Dutch this is a strippenkaart.

Per class it is often cheaper than drop-in classes, and you are not tied to a fixed evening. Do check how long it is valid. Many class cards are valid for a set period, and classes you don't use may then expire.

How does a course work?

You sign up for a fixed series of classes, for example ten weeks on the same evening, with the same group.

The advantage is that you progress together with the same people and the classes build on each other. You usually pay for the course in advance.

Is a dance membership better value?

Per class it often is, as long as you actually come every week. If you regularly miss a week, you pay more per class than you think.

With a membership (abonnement) you pay per month and can take a set number of classes per week, or unlimited classes. Read the terms carefully:

  • Contract length: for how many months are you committing?
  • Renewal: does the membership continue automatically afterwards?
  • Notice period: how far in advance do you have to cancel?
  • Registration fee (inschrijfgeld): do you pay a one-off amount at the start?
  • Holidays and missed classes: can you make up a class or pause the membership?

What do schools charge in practice?

At eighteen Latin dance schools in ten cities, from Groningen to Breda, most one-hour classes cost between 11 and 15 euros. That is what we saw on their own websites, checked in October 2026.

They were large and small schools in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Groningen, Nijmegen, Arnhem, Zwolle, Tilburg and Breda. The sources are listed at the bottom. What we saw:

  • Drop-in class: 15 to 25 euros, at most schools 16.50 to 19 euros. One school charged 28.50 euros for a 90-minute class. More than half of the schools didn't list a price for a drop-in class.
  • Course: usually ten classes, sometimes six to eight. Per one-hour class that came to roughly 10 to 20 euros, at most schools 11 to 14.50 euros.
  • Membership with one class a week: 47 to 86.50 euros a month, at most schools 47 to 65 euros. Converted, that is 11 to 15 euros per class at most schools. The longer the contract (three, six or twelve months), the lower the monthly price. A few schools let you cancel monthly.
  • Trial class: free at seven schools, 5 to 10 euros elsewhere. Sometimes that amount is deducted when you sign up.
  • Registration fee: mentioned by only one school (10 euros).

The expensive end was mainly in Amsterdam and for 90-minute classes. Prices change, and a few websites were not clearly dated. So always check the school's own website.

What does a private dance lesson cost?

More than a group class, because you have the teacher to yourself. At the seven schools in the sample below that list their price on their website, a private lesson cost between roughly 70 and 95 euros per hour, usually 75 to 90 euros (checked in October 2026). Member discounts and top rates for a head teacher are not included.

A private lesson is useful if you want to learn something specific, such as a wedding first dance, or if you get stuck in a group. If the price isn't on the website, ask the school. You can read more about the first dance in your wedding first dance.

Is the cheapest school the best choice?

Not necessarily. Also look at the experience of the school and its teachers.

Many schools are relaxed about training their teachers. Being a good dancer does not make someone a good teacher. A teacher with twenty years of experience is a different thing from someone who has just started, and you can't see that in the price.

You notice the difference later. If you learn it properly straight away, you won't have to correct it later. Don't be swayed by who has the most eye-catching dancing on social media either; that says little about how well you learn there. Ask around. More on this in how do you choose a good dance school.

What other costs are there?

Sometimes entry to socials or parties, and eventually perhaps dance shoes. None of that has to happen straight away.

There are also socials without an entry fee. At the schools we looked at, entry varied from free to 12.50 euros. Dance shoes are nice, but not necessary for the first classes.
